Overview – Trek to the Valley of Lares and Sanctuary of Machu Picchu
Unlike all popular treks around Cusco, the Lares Trek will genuinely take you to remote zones, hidden valleys where few visitors have ventured so far.
This journey takes you off the beaten track in the Andes, crossing beautiful lush valleys, passing lovely villages where the natives still employ traditional ways of life.
A trek to Lares is like going back in time, a different world where Spanish is a second language, and where native still live in harmony with the Mother Nature.
On our third day, we take a fantastic train journey descending to the cloud forest where is situated one of the wonders of our Planet ” The Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.”
Day 1°: Cusco – Huaran – Cancha Cancha.
Our Lares adventure starts in the city of Cusco; therefore our guide will pick you up from your hotel.
Shortly afterward, we drive throughout the Sacred Valley for about 1 hour till the village of Huaran (2,840m)
At Huaran we will start our trek, at this point we meet our horsemen.
Afterward, we take a steep path following the streams of the Cancha Cancha river.
Overnight at Cancha Cancha campsite. (3800 m)
Day 2°: Cancha Cancha – Quishuarani.
Soon after breakfast, we continue up the valley, passing small rural houses built mainly with stones.
Today we start on a gentle path but after one hour or so, we begin a climbing trail that leads to the first pass, called Pachacutec Pass (4,450m)
Once at the top you will get superb views of Pachacutec Lake and the snowy peaks of Pitusiray mountain.
Later on, the trail continues along a narrow mountain ridge.
Afterward we descent into a beautifully secluded quarry filled with glacial lakes and abundant birdlife.
Following the border of the quarry, we walk down towards another valley, passing little waterfalls until reaching the village of Quishuarani.
Overnight at the Quishuarani campsite. (3,700m)
Day 3°: Quishuarani – Lares – Ollantaytambo – Train to Aguas Calientes.
After breakfast, we will walk downhill for about 3 hours towards the Lares town. (3,100m).
In Lares, we visit the nearby thermal baths; therefore you might relax a bit in its pools.
Shortly after lunch, we take a bus to Ollantaytambo village, where we will take the train towards Aguas Calientes.
The train leaves at around 16:00 h, towards Aguas Calientes, a little village close to the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.
During the train journey, we will enjoy beautiful views of the countryside as well as staggering views of the Andes.
After approximately 2 hours we will arrive at Aguas Calientes train station.
Upon arrival, our representative will collect you from the station and then escort you to your hotel.
The evening is free; therefore you will have free time to explore this little village on your own.
Overnight at the Hotel Casa Andina Machu Picchu *** or similar.
Day 4°: Private tour to the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.
06:00 h. After breakfast, our local guide meets you at the hotel lobby.
Shortly afterward, we take a tourist bus up to the ruins of Machu Picchu.
The bus ride lasts only twenty minutes, but, offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.
Upon our arrival, our guide will show you the most remarkable sights of Machu Picchu.
Among the buildings, we will visit the Sun Temple, the Solar Clock, the Condor temple and others.
Likewise, we also visit the Inti Watana altar, a magnificent spot at the heart of Machu Picchu.
After exploring the city, you will have free time to walk around Machu Picchu on your own.
Eventually, we will take the bus down to the village of Aguas Calientes.
Free time for lunch. In Aguas Calientes, you have plenty of restaurants options.
Finally, we head to the station to take the train back to Cusco.
Upon your arrival in Cusco, our driver picks you up at the station and then drives you to your hotel.
