Tour to the Countryside of Arequipa

Part I: Yanahuara.

Our tour begins at your hotel in Arequipa; our local guide picks you up from there.
Shortly after that, we drive towards the traditional neighborhood of Yanahuara.
Once there, we will visit a colonial church built in the Andean Baroque style.
This church has beautiful carvings on its facade, showing Spanish and Inca motifs.

Nearby, we will see the traditional arches of Yanahuara, built in the 19th century.
These iconic arches show part of Arequipa’s history through verses carved in low relief.
The arches are particularly beautiful due to the volcanic material used in them.
Additionally, the site offers excellent views of volcanoes in the background.

Part II: Carmen Alto.

Continuing our tour, we will visit the natural lookout point of Carmen Alto.
From here we will appreciate the lovely countryside with excellent River views.
Afterward, we will visit the Founder’s Mansion of Arequipa.

Part III: The Founder’s Mansion.

The Founder’s Mansion is an excellent example of colonial architecture.
The mansion was turned into a museum and dates back to the 18th century.

Nowadays, the museum displays paintings as well as weapons from the Spanish era.
It also shows antique furniture and artwork with Inca symbolism.
Later on, we leave The Founder’s Mansion and head towards Sabandia.

Part IV: The Mill of Sabandia.

Once in Sabandia, we will visit the first stone mill of Arequipa.
This watermill was built with white volcanic rock and it is still working.
It represents certainly an iconic tool from colonial times.

During our visit, we will learn about its history and the engineering behind it.
In addition, we can see an interesting cactus collection, as well as a nice garden.
Besides, the site also provides a wonderful view of Misti Volcano.

Finally, we will return to your hotel in Arequipa.
