Land Tour to the Nazca Lines

Land Tour to the Nazca Lines

USD $35 per person

The Mirador or metallic tower was a donation obtained by Dra. Maria Reiche during her work on the Nazca Lines zone in 1976. The tower is 13 meters high and allows visitors to see clearly two of the famous Nazca Lines, the Hands and the Tree figure. The Mirador is located on one side of the Pan American highway, some 20 kilometers away from the modern city of Nazca. The Mirador of the Nazca Lines is the best options for those that do not want to fly, as the tower offers great view not only of two of the Nazca Lines, but also another figures such as the lizard (which was split in two when authorities built the Pan American road in 1937) and many geometrical shapes located nearby.

Our land excursion begin with the collection of our customers at their hotel, afterwards we will drive our private vehicle to the northwest of Nazca towards the desert, following the Pan-American Highway. On our journey we will first visit the Maria Reiche Museum, an interesting place where we will learn about the life of Maria Reiche, a German lady who dedicated over 50 years of her life to protect and study the Nazca Lines. The museum was originally the house of Maria when she used to live in the area in the 1970’s, and some years later in 1994 it was turned into a museum. The life of Maria Reiche is shown throughout old pictures taken when she was working on the Nazca desert long ago, showing a tireless Maria mapping, measuring and even cleaning the Nazca Lines. Her original cottage that housed her for over 20 years still can be seen here, showing all her personal belongings, including typing machine, old camera, tools of measurements and many others tools. On the right side of the Museum is situated her grave, where she was buried in 1998. Later on, we will continue our tour at the Mirador or Tower, from where it is possible to observe clearly two of the Nazca Lines, The Hand and the Tree. The hands figure or geoglyph, as they are also called by archaeologists is located on the left side of the tower. For some people this figure it would be representing also a frog, a divinity of water, an element of vital importance in such environment. According to the archaeologists most of the figures located in this area were made between 100 AD till 300 AD. The tree figure is located on the right side of the tower, at just few metres away from the Pan American highway. It measures about 70 metres in length and represents a local tree called Huarango, which is very abundant in the Nazca Valley. It is said that the Huarango tree lives up to 1000 years and its wood is one of the hardest woods in the world. It seems the Nazca people used the wood of this tree as a sort of stake to make the long lines and also to make the columns at the temples of Cahuachi and the roof of their tombs. Finally we will climb a small hill from where it is possible to observe many lines radiating out in all directions. Finally we will return to Nazca. End of the tour.
