Visiting Peru in January

January marks the height of summer on the Peruvian Coast, characterized by warm temperatures and little rainfall. For the Highlands is the rainy season. Days are sunny, but afternoons often bring short, intense rain showers. The Jungle experiences heavy rainfall due to the wet season, with hot and humid days.

  • Anniversary of Lima. Lima celebrates its birthday on January 18, the day Spanish conqueror Francisco Pizarro founded the city in 1535. The city marks the occasion with a wide range of cultural and artistic festivities.

In February Weather conditions differ by region. Coastal areas tend to be warm and dry, on the Jungle rains a lot, while the Andean highlands often have cold temperatures with rain. The Inca Trail is closed in February due to heavy rain and potential landslides. On the other hand, Feburary offers colorful festivities, particularly in highland cities such as Puno and Cajamarca. February is also one of the best time to visit the beaches in the south of Lima.

The month of March signals the change from the rainy season to the dry season in numerous regions. Many regions may see better weather conditions, but some places, especially in the Andes and the Jungle, might still have persistent rainfall. The warm temperatures on the Coast make it an excellent time for lounging by the ocean or exploring coastal towns. In March, the Ica Vendimia Festival, attracts thousands of visitors. They come to enjoy local folklore and the delicious flavors of local food, wine, and spirits.

April in Peru marks the shift from the wet season to the dry season. Rainfall lessens on the Highlands and Amazon, and temperatures become more moderate. The coastal areas tend to still be warm.The Andean highlands offer a pleasant climate for activities like trekking to Machu Picchu, however, evenings and early mornings can be quite cold. Despite being the beginning of the dry season, the Amazon region can still see some rainfall, but less compared to the earlier months.
